Started in 2004 by Mark Curdo, Labor Day Records is an independent record label/artist representation outfit based in Portland, Maine. After 20 plus years in the music business as everything from an artist, record store manager, radio disc jockey to head of national marketing and promotions for successful indie record label in New Jersey; Curdo decided he wanted to continue on his own terms. He wanted to get back to the simplicity of people working hard for the music they are passionate about. His plan was to team up with artists that deserved an honest chance to succeed. He set up Labor Day to be a home base and launch pad to the bands he believes in.
After the first Labor Day release, the Beautiful Locals compilation (Portland bands covering other Portland bands), Curdo focused on teaming up with a few acts he wanted to work for daily. Enter modern rock giants Lost on Liftoff, hard rock dub/ska act Sidecar Radio, the Beatle-esque roots twelve piece Spencer & The School Spirit Mafia and Maine metal monsters, Ruin. A little bit of everything, which is a perfect fit for Curdo's almost across the board love for music. Even with a crippled industry, Curdo feels safe in his experience, passion and knack for great music.
"Technology changes daily, people's tastes are on and off all the time; every day in music is different and un-predictable. The one thing you can count is people will always want great music. That makes me feel confident about what we're doing. I'm working with great music everyday."
